Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming
From tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse's lineage coming
As seers of old have sung.
It came, a blossom bright,
Amid the cold of winter
When half spent was the night.

Isaiah 'twas foretold it,
The Rose I have in mind:
With Mary we behold it,
The virgin mother kind.
To show God's love aright
She bore for us a Saviour
When half spent was the night.

Call to Worship

Joy is like Hope. There are different kinds of joy.
We feel a deep Joy knowing that God dwells among us.
It is the Joy of knowing that we are saved by Christ's
love and celebration of his birth.
It is the Joy of belonging to a world-wide group of people
All called by the Spirit and loved by God.

Come and worship. Come and feel the joy.
Come and be yourself in this safe and beautiful space.
May God be with us. May Christ be with us.
Amen.

Christina & friend are called
to light the third Advent Candle.

A Candle is Burning
(VU 6)

A candle is burning,
A flame warm and bright,
A candle of hope
In December's dark night.
While angels sing blessings
From heaven's starry sky,
Our hearts we prepare now
For Jesus is nigh.

A candle is burning,
A candle of peace,
A candle to signal
That conflict must cease:
For Jesus is coming
To show us the way;
A message of peace
Humbly laid in the hay.

A candle is burning,
A candle of joy,
A candle to welcome
Brave Mary's new boy.
Our hearts fill with wonder,
And eyes light and glow
As joy brightens winter
Like sunshine on snow.

Mary, Woman of the Promise
(VU 16)

Mary, woman of the promise,
Bearer of your people's dreams,
Through your open, willing spirit
Waters of God's goodness streamed.

Mary, song of holy wisdom,
Sung before the world began,
Faithful to the Word within,
You carried out God's wondrous plan.

Mary, morning star of justice,
Mirror of the Radiant Light,
In the shadows of life's journey,
Be a beacon for our sight.

O Little Town of Bethlehem
(vu 64)

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in the dark street shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary;
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God, the King,
And peace to all on earth.

How silently, how silently
The wondrous Gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessed gift of heaven.
No ear may hear His coming;
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him,
still, the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in;
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
Oh, come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Immanuel!

"...suddenly there was with the angel
a multitude of the heavenly host

O Come All Ye Faithful
(VU 60)

O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels:

R. O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

God of God,
Light of Light,
Lo, he abhors not the Virgin's womb;
Very God,
Begotten, not created: R.

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of Heaven above!
Glory to God
In the highest: R.

See how the shepherds
Summoned to his cradel,
Leaving their flocks,
Draw nigh with lowly fear;
We too will thithe
Bend our joyful steps; R.

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be glory given!
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing: R.

Silent Night, Holy Night
(VU 67)

Silent night! Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight:
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing Hallelujah,
Christ the Saviour is born,
Christ the Saviour is born.

Silent night! Holy night!
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

- Anthem -

Thou shalt know him when he comes,
Not by any din of drums,
Nor the vantage of his airs,
Nor by anything he wears,
Neither by his crown, nor his gown,
But his presence known
Shall be by the holy harmony,
Which his coming makes in thee...

Offertory Hymn

(VU 55, verse 4)

What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a wise man, I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him -
Give my heart.

What Child Is This?
(VU 74)

What child is this, who laid to rest,
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?

R: This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies he in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear; for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading. R.

So bring him incense, gold and myrh;
Come, one and all, to own him.
The King of Kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him. R.

Commissioning

Go out Shepherds and tell what you have seen and heard!
We go out, blessing God and singing praises
You are witnesses of the Good News of God
And we go, sharing God's goodness in the world.
Go out in the world then, knowing that you are not of this world
We are blessed people of God, Believers in the sea of believers, for God's glory.

- Postlude -

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?
In the lane, snow is glistening
A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight
Walking in a winter wonderland
Gone away is the bluebird
Here to stay is a new bird
He sings a love song as we go along
Walking in a winter wonderland...

(Felix Bernard and Richard B. Smith, 1934)
