Classical Music Recital

Elias-Axel Pettersson, Pianist

March 7, 2015

Once again the music lovers amongst us were transported from the mundane to another place by the musicality of Elias-Axel Pettersson in a masterful solo performance of Bach, Scriabin and Chopin.

As in the past, Elias greatly enhanced the musical experience by his engaging and informative explanations of each piece.
First on the program was one of Bach's six Partitas for keyboard (originally played by Bach on the harpsichord): Partita No. 1 in B-flat major. This work was a suite of six dances with an opening Praeludium (Latin for 'Prelude').

You can hear my favourite movement in a suite, the Corrente ('Courante') by clicking on Bach's portrait to the right (right-click on the picture and chose "Open in New Tab").

J.S. Bach (1685 – 1750) at age 61 years.
Portrait by Elias Gottlob Haussmann, 1746.

Elias's second presentation was of Fantasy in B minor, Opus 25
by Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915);
A wonderfully evocative piece by the Russian composer but too long to be presented here.
More's the Pity!

The second half of the programme consisted of ten of the Twelve Etudes Op. 25 by Chopin.
As a fine example I have chosen the first of the etudes (nicknamed the "Aeolian Harp" by the publisher of the day).
It is a fine example of how a too often poorly played and over-done piece can be made beautiful and lyrical by the right performer.

Let us hope it is not the last time we see Elias at Summerlea!
