Candlelight Service - Hymns & Anthems

To a Maid Whose Name Was Mary
(VU 14)

To a maid whose name was Mary,
The angel Gabriel came.
"Fear not," the angel told her,
"I come to bring good news,
Good news I come to tell you,
Good news, I say, good news."

Angel Gabriel visits Mary

"For you are highly favoured
By God the Lord of all,
Who even now is with you.
You are on earth most blest,
You are most blest, most blessed,
God chose you, you are blest!"

Mary ponders Gabriels's visit...

But Mary was most troubled
To hear the angel's word.
What was the angle saying?
It troubled her to hear,
To hear the angel's message,
It troubled her to hear.

"Fear not, for God is with you,
And you shall bear a child.
His name shall be called Jesus,
God's offspring from on high.
And he shall reign forever,
Forever reign on high."

"How shall this be" said Mary,
"That I should be with child?"
The angel answered quickly,
"The power of the Most High
Will come upon you shortly,
Your child shall be God's child."

As Mary heard the angel,
She wondered at his words.
"Behold, I am your handmaid,"
She said unto her God.
"So be it; I am ready
According to your word."

O Come All Ye Faithful
(VU 60)

O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels:

R. O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

God of God,
Light of Light,
Lo, he abhors not the Virgin's womb;
Very God,
Begotten, not created: R.

Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing, all ye citizens of Heaven above!
Glory to God
In the highest: R.

See how the shepherds
Summoned to his cradel,
Leaving their flocks,
Draw nigh with lowly fear;
We too will thithe
Bend our joyful steps; R.

Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
Born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be glory given!
Word of the Father,
Now in flesh appearing: R.

Silent was the night in Bethlehem,
Peacefully the stars shone above,
Softly the breeze swayed the olive trees,
Silent was the night
When God sent down his love...

What Child Is This?
(VU 74)

What child is this, who laid to rest,
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?

R: This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies he in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear; for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading. R.

So bring him incense, gold and myrh;
Come, one and all, to own him.
The King of Kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him. R.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
(VU 48)

Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King,
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!"
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail, the incarnate deity,
Pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that we no more may die,
Born to raise us from the earth,
Born to give us second birth.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Clear in the darkness a light shines in Bethlehem.
Angels are singing, their sound fills the air.
Wise men have journeyed to greet their Messiah;
But only a mother and baby lie there.
Ave Maria, ave Maria.
Hear the soft lullaby the angel hosts sing.
Ave Maria, ave Maria...

(By John Rutter)

There's A Star In The East
(VU 70)

There's a star in the east
On Christmas morn,
Rise up shepherd and follow,
It'll lead to the place
Where the Christ was born.
Rise up shepherd and follow.

R. Follow, follow,
Rise up shepherd and follow,
Follow the Star of Bethlehem,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow.

If you take good heed
To the angel's words,
Rise up shepherd and follow,
You'll forget your flocks,
You'll forget your herds,
Rise up shepherd and follow. R.

Mary, Did You Know?
(Lowry & Greene)

Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered
Will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Will calm a storm with His hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked
Where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby
You've kissed the face of God
Mary, did you know? ....

We Three Kings

We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star

R:  O Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Westward leading, still proceeding
Guide us to thy Perfect Light

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain
Gold I bring to crown Him again
King forever, ceasing never
Over us all to reign. R.

Frankincense to offer have I
Incense owns a Deity nigh
Prayer and praising, all men aising
Worship Him, God most high. R.

Glorious now behold Him arise
King and God and Sacrifice
Alleluia, Alleluia
Earth to heav'n replies R.

"...Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary,
the baby’s mother,
“This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall,
and many others to rise.
He has been sent as a sign from God,
but many will oppose him..."

(Luke 2:25-35)

Rejoice! Christ Is Born!

(Larry Shackley)

Good Christian friends rejoice
With heart and soul and voice.
Give ye heed to what we say:
Jesus Christ is born today!
And he is in the manger now...

Let There Be Peace On Earth
(Jill Jackson and Sy Miller)

Let there be peace on earth,
and let it begin with me;
let there be peace on earth,
the peace that was meant to be.

With God our creator,
family all are we.
Let us walk with each other
in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.

With ev'ry step I take
Let this be my solemn vow
To take each moment and live
Each moment in peace eternally
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.

- Connie joins Lucia for a 4-hand Accompaniment for a rousing Finale!

Patapan

Willie take your little drum;
With your whistle, Robin, come!
When we hear the fife and drum,
Tu-re-lu-reulu, pat-a-pat-pan,
When we hear th music play,
Christmas comes to us this day...
