Christmas Eve Family Worship

Yet another Christmas Eve and the sanctuary fills with congregants, friends from the community and visiting families. They gather for another telling of the ages old tale, for the completion of the advent wreath with the Christ Candle, for the singing of the familiar songs. |

After the opening hymn and the lighting of the advent wreath it's time for action. Mrs. Music Connie Osborne enlists the help of the young adults of Summerlea to encourage the young visitors who are willing to come up front and get involved with an a capella singing of "We Wish you a Merry Christmas." All are involved in the singing and the rhythm sections of triangles, bells and sticks. |

After the reading from Isaiah we are presented with three modern young women friends of Mary texting back and forth on their I-phones in the OMG and LOL (OhMyGod! and LaughOutLoud) lexicon of the new idiom about the scandalous news from their friend. Mary is pregnant and Mary is NOT married! Why does she seem so happy? Doesn't she know she could be stoned to death for her apparent transgression? They wonder what her hopefullness means. Could the world be changing? |

The Pageant continues. Somehow Scott and Susan McKenzie marshal willing youngsters and teens from the pews and the scene materializes. Readings from Luke and Matthew are punctuated with congregational singing that supports and furthers the story. We see young Mary and Joseph in the stable. Complete with donkey! And there is a baby. And there are angels and shepherds and worshipping wisemen. And the story is all at once both new and old. |

As in the last several years, Connie invites the youth up front to close the worship with the singing of Happy Christmas (War is Over, if you want it) by John Lennon. The congregation joins and sways in time for the closing chorus. |

But it can't be over yet! The McKenzie family hasn't distributed home cooked GingerBread Men amongst the congregation. Every year Susan and Kevin and the 3 kids have baked and decorated and bagged gingerbread cookies for all. Thank you McKenzies -- for all that you do. |
